Item 131-1 uptake and serum T3, T4 and TSH levels amoung goitrous and non-goitrous school children in an endemic and a non-endemic area in Sri Lanka(The Sri Lanka Medical Association. Colombo, 1991) Herath, K.B.; Balasuriya, S.; Katugampola, S.L.; Perera, P.A.J.; Fernando, M.A.Radioiodine uptake by the thyroid at 2 houes and 24 hours and levels of the hormones T3, T4 and TSH in blood of 112 school children over 16 years of age with clinically demonstrable goitre (grade 1B and above) have been measured. Of them 92 lived in an endemic area and 20 in a non-endemic area. They have been compared with age and sex matched clinically non-goitrous controls from the same schools in the two areas. The results show that the hormone levels are of little use in diagnosing iodine deficiency, Radioiodine uptake is a more sensitive test of iodine deficient goitre. Results also indicate the there may be factors other than iodine deficiency responsible for the development of goitreItem Age at menarche in three districts in Sri Lanka(Sri Lanka Medical Association. Colombo, 1990) Balasuriya, S.Item Menarcheal age and nutritional status of Sri Lankan girls(SLMA. Colombo, 1990) Balasuriya, S.The mean age at menarche based on recall data of a sample of 303 girls was 13,83 years. This mean was 0.6 years higher than the mean of 13.2 years observed among Kandy urban children of a slightly higher socio-economic status. It was found that the nutritionally poor girls are at a disadvantage and reach menarche about 0.5 years later than the nutritionally good.Item Observer variability in anthropometry(Sri Lanka Medical Association. Colombo, 1988) Balasuriya, S.Sixteen trained field workers, woking in eight teams, measured eight children to find the observer variability in the anthropometric measurements. All measurements were found to be subjected to a significant observer error, stature being the one with least error and skinfold thickness the one with the highest error. It is recommended that the latter measurement should not be used unless obsolutely indicated. The importance of recognising the high degree of observer error is discussed and certain precautions to reduce it are indicated.Item Prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths in the Hindagala community health project area(Ceylon Medical Association.
