Item 131-1 uptake and serum T3, T4 and TSH levels amoung goitrous and non-goitrous school children in an endemic and a non-endemic area in Sri Lanka(The Sri Lanka Medical Association. Colombo, 1991) Herath, K.B.; Balasuriya, S.; Katugampola, S.L.; Perera, P.A.J.; Fernando, M.A.Radioiodine uptake by the thyroid at 2 houes and 24 hours and levels of the hormones T3, T4 and TSH in blood of 112 school children over 16 years of age with clinically demonstrable goitre (grade 1B and above) have been measured. Of them 92 lived in an endemic area and 20 in a non-endemic area. They have been compared with age and sex matched clinically non-goitrous controls from the same schools in the two areas. The results show that the hormone levels are of little use in diagnosing iodine deficiency, Radioiodine uptake is a more sensitive test of iodine deficient goitre. Results also indicate the there may be factors other than iodine deficiency responsible for the development of goitreItem A patient with rapid cognitive decline and visual failure(Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo:Colombo, 2017) Chang, T.Item Acceptance of a genetic service in Sri Lanka. a student viewpoint(Sri Lanka Medical Association. Colombo, 1986) Jayasekara, R.The attitudes of a group of final year medical students of the faculty of medicine, Colombo, on the establishment of a genetic service counselling, prenatal diagnosis and therapeutic abortion as its main components, have been analysed. More than 70perc. of the respondents reacted positive to various aspects of the three genetic components. Of the variable sex, religion and awareness of the existence of a human genetic unit providing genetic counselling only religion had a significant impact on the response "genetic counselling is both a usefull and necessary medical service"Item Acute bilateral pleural effusions in ankylosing spondylitis(Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo:Colombo, 2019) Narani, A.; Pirasath, S.Item The aetiology and pathology of uterine cancer in Ceylon(University of ceylon. Colombo, 1996) Goonewardena, I.M.R.; Liyanage, C.To study the effectiveness of an oral iron supplement adminiatered only three times a week in improving the iron status of pregnant womenItem Anthropometric measurements of Sri Lankan newborns(University of Colombo. Colombo, 1998) Nanayakkara, D.A study was conducted with the aim of establishing the mean birth weight, crown heel length and head circumference for Sri Lankan newborns. A total of 1325 normal, singleton babies (993 sinhalese and 332 moor) with ultrasonically confirmed period of gestation, born at the Maternity unit of the Base hospital Kegalle, were selected. Means and standard deviations for the above measurements of the sinhalese and moor babies were established. Since the number of babies were established. Since the number of babies belonging to the Tamil ethnic group was small for statistical analysis. they were excluded from the study. For all three measurements, the mean values of male newborns were higher than those of the female newborns. when compared with the sinhalese the moor, males and females had highly significant higher values for birth weight crown heel length and head circumfereence (P0.001) simple linear regression analyses were carried out between the baby's weight age and parity. A significant relationship was observed between the baby's weight and mothers weight.Item Anthropometric study of medical students(Sri Lanka Medical Association. Colombo, 1988) Balasuriya, P.Stature, sitting height, biacromial diameter, total arm length and foot length were measured in 133 mdical students. Analysis of data showed no ethnic differences in the mean values for measurements in males and females, in contrast to some past studies. Sex differences in the mean values were significant. Stature, sitting height, total arm length showed positive correlation with each pther in both sexes. While the correlation of biocromial diameter with other measurements was low in males, there was no correlation in females. The results indicate that a significant increase in stature since 1937 and 1948 has taken place due to a disproportionate increase in length of the lower limbs compared to the trunk. The upper limbs too appear to show an increase in length proportionate to stature. There is a significant increase in the transverse diameter of the upper end of the trunk. Certain segments of the body bear a constant relation ship to stature in both sexes.Item Anthropometry of Sri Lanka sportsmen and sportswomen, with special reference to body mass index(The Sri Lanka Medical Association. Colombo, 1991) Wickramanayake, T.W.; Dissanayake, J.; Wickramanayake, G.N.; Amarasinghe, S.Weight, height (TH), sitting height (SH), skinfoid thikness and mid upper arm circumference have been measured in 235 sportsmen and 204 sportswomen, drawn from several districtsm participating in tournaments held in Colombo between March and August 1988 in order to obtain reliable data on Sri Lankan adults, to look for inter-district and inter-gan=mes diferences, and to study the suitability of a BMI less than 18.5 for diagnosis of chronic energy inadequacy. Inter-district diferences, reported in studies carried out about 40 years ago, no longer exist. Diferences between games for the variables weight, TH, SH and total body fat are significant for both genders, and for the variable BMI in the case of males. There has been a positive point, only 53perc. of women and 77.9perc. of men are categorised as being energy adequate. It is concluded that the BMR of Sri Lankan adults is probably lower than the values by the FAO/WHO in calculating energy requirementsItem Antigestational effects of Icon. a pyrethroid insecticide on mid pregnancy of rats(University of Colombo. Colombo, 2004) Ratnasooriya, W.D.; Ratnayake, S.S.K.; Jayatunge, Y.N.A.Item Applicability of NCHS height-for-age weight-for-age reference values to Sri Lankan school children(Sri Lanka Medical Association. Colombo, 1988) Kandiah, R.; Wickramanayake, T.W.Height-for-age sndweight-for-age of children drawn from the upper socio-economic-educational households in Sri LAnka have been compared with the corresponding NCHS reference values. Results indicate that the NCHS height-for-age reference values for children between 5 and 9 years of age are "attainable" by Sri Lankan children, except at centiles above the 75th. The NCHS weight-for-age reference value are well above the corresponding values for Sri Lankan children between 10 and 18 years of age. Between 5 and 9 years of age, Sri Lankan girls are significantly lighter than the NCHS population. There is no significant difference between weights of boys, 5 to 9 years, in the two populations. The advisability of using NCHS reference values for weight-for-height for assessing the degree of "wasting" in Sri Lankan children is questionedItem Arachnoid Granulations and arachnoid villi in mammals(University of Ceylon. Colombo, 1969) Jayatilaka, A.D.P.Item Associated factors of electrical injuries and knowledge on their prevention and first aid management among Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) field level technical workers in Colombo municipal area.(Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo:Colombo, 2017) Arachchi, K.A.P.K.; Kumarawansha, P.G.K.M.; Kuruppu, K.A.R.L.; Kaliyugavarathan, L.; Samaranayake, D.
