Item Aetiological factors of Chronic Kidney Disease in the North Central Province(COLLEGE OF COMMUNITY PHYSICIANS OF SRI LANKA, 2012-06) Wanigasuriya, KAbstract Introduction Chronic kidney disease of unknown aetiology is a major health care problem in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka. During the last decade several researches were undertaken to identify the prevalence and aetiology of the disease. Fifteen manuscripts published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and two peer reviewed abstracts of were included in the review. Results The disease mainly affects males from poor socio-economic backgrounds who are involved in paddy farming . Mild proteinuria was present but urinary sediments were normal. Renal biopsies were reported as interstitial nephritis. Significant predictors of kidney disease in these patients included age, history of smoking, being under treatment for hypertension and drinking well water in the fields. Studies on heavy metal and ochratoxin exposure have revealed conflicting results. Fluoride content of well water in all these areas exceeded the WHO recommended level of 0.6 mg/L. Water in all areas was alkaline which could facilitate mobilization of fluoride from minerals indicating a fluoride mediated mechanism for renal damage. Conclusion The aetiology of CKDu in NCP of Sri Lanka is probably multi-factorial involving one or more environmental factors and a possible genetic predisposition in vulnerable populations.Item Among Farmers in Sri Lanka, Kidney Disease on the Rise: Environmental Causes Being Considered(1997) Victorian, B.; disease prevalenceItem Arsenic and hardness in ground water from chronic disease of unknown etiology (CKDU) prevalent areas and non-ckdu prevalent areas in Sri Lanka(2012) Fonseka, S.; Jayasumana, C.; Jayalath, K.; Amarasinghe, M; Senanayake, K; Wijewardhene, C.; Samarasinghe, D; Dahanayake, K; Mahamithawa, P; Paranagama, PItem Arsenic and other heavy metals in rice from Sri Lanka preliminar6y results with ICP-MS(2012) Chandrajith, R.; Dissanayake, N.; Dissanayake, C.B.Item Arsenic Related Skin Manifestations in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Aetiology (CKDu) in The North Central Province of Sri Lanka(Sri Lanka Medical Association, 2012-06) Dassanayake, Rajeewa; Hulangamuwa, S.; Abeysekara, D.T.D.JIntroduction: A recent presentation has claimed a high prevalence of arsenic (As) related skin manifestations among CKDu patients. In 12 CKDu endemic villages, almost 45% patients were thought to have As related skin manifestations. The same investigators and others, in a website by the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW) claim that almost 80% show the same manifestations. We studied the prevalence of As related skin manifestations in renal clinic patients with CKDu. Methods: A sample was selected from patients attending the renal clinic, teaching hospital, Anuradhapura. All patients with CKDu attending on a single day were consented, and all consenting patients were referred to a consultant dermatologist, specifically for assessment of As related skin changes. Results: 54 patients were identified and all patients gave consent. Data sheets after consultant dermatologist assessment were returned by 30. Only one had possible As related skin changes, and is planned for further investigations. Conclusions: As related skin changes are rare, if present at all, in CKDu patients in the North Central Province.Item Challenges ahead: water quality and human health(Post Graduate Institute of Science, Peradeniya, Sri Lanka in collaboration with Toyama Prefretural University, Japan, 2012-03) Ileperuma, O.; Priyantha, N.; Navaratne, A.; Yatigammana, S.; Weragoda, S.Item Chronic kidney disease :risk factor identification (secondary data analysis)(2011-04) Jayasinghe, Y.K.R.T.Item Chronic kidney disease of unknown aetiology in Sri Lanka: is cadmium a likely cause?(2011) Wanigasuriya, K.P.; Peiris-John, R.J.; Wickremasinghe, R.Item Chronic kidney disease of unknown aetiology in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka :trying to unravel the mystery(Sri Lanka Medical Association, 2011) Wickremasinghe, A.R.; Peiris-John, R.J.; Wanigasuriya, K.
