This paper outlines the historical developments and highlights some milestones and past achievements in animal health research and laboratory services in Sri Lanka. It seeks to identify current and future trends and priorities. Lack of local funds and hence the consequent dependence on foreign sources for infrastructure development and training and the high attrition rate of trained manpower are identified as the major constraints.en_US
