Colombo, 1974) Dissanayake, S.A.W.; De Silva, W.P.The annual figures for deaths from suicide in Sri Lanka greatly exceed the total of sudden deaths to homicide and accidents. A study of the suicide pattern in Sri Lanka indicates that the rate has risen sharply over the past two decades. The rate for the island has surpassed the rates of some Western countries like Britain and the U.S.A. and has approached the higher rates prevalent in several other European countries. This nortable increase in the suicide rate seems to parallel the rapid growth of populations as well as socio-economic transformations and upheavals taking place in our traditional way of life following independence.Item Prevalence of pulmonary tuberculosis in graphite miners(Sri Lanka Medical Association. Colombo, 1974) Uragoda, C.G.A total of 403 workers at a graphite mine was radiologically examined. There was evidence that 10 of them developed pulmonary tuberculosis whil working in the mine. The probable reasons for this are discussedItem Pharmacology of some arthropod venoms of Sri Lanka(Sri Lanka Medical Association. Colombo, 1974) Kottegoda, S.R.The Ceylon Hunting Spider, Poecilothermia casciata and the giant Ceylon Centipede, Scolopendra moristants are two arthropods of Sri Lanka which can cause poisonous effects in man. Pharmacologically active substances common to the venom of both were 5HT and histamine. The venom of the spider contained a neuromuscular stimulant. On the basis of these findings the treatment of envenomation is discussed.Item Effect of two commonly used nitrogenous fertilizers on infective Ascaris lumbricoides Ova(Sri Lanka Medical Association. Colombo, 1976) Edirisinghe, J.S.; Ihalamulla, R.L.The effect of urea and ammonium sulphate on effective Ascaris ova was studied. It was shown that these two compounds have no ovicidal effect on infective Ascaris ova in the concentrations used. Decortication of the Uva was observed in the first two concentrations of both test solutions. The motility and the hatchability of the contained larvae were also lowered in the higher concentrations of the test solutions.Item Lymph node imprint cytology in the diagnosis of Lymphadenopathy(Sri Lanka Medical Association. Colombo, 1976) Chandrasoma, P.T.A cytological study of lymph nodes excised from 11 patients is reported. These patients had final diagnoses of Hodgkin's disease (3), non-hodgkin's lymphoma (3), Tuberculous lymphadenitis (3), Infectious mononucleosis (1) and Squamous carcinoma deposit (1). Imprint cytology of lymph nodes was found to be an easy, rapid methode which enable identification of abnormal cells in lymph nodes with greater accuracy than histological examination. It is therefore a valuable adjunct to the histological diagnosis of lymphadenopathy.Item Changes observed in the median eminence the adenohypophysis and the thyroid gland in Rhacophorus leucomystax maculatus (Gray) during metamorphosis(University of Ceylon.
