An evaluation of the usefulness of different diameters of skin reactions elicited by Mycobacterium leprae antigens
(Sri Lanka Medical Association. Colombo, 1989) Pinto, M.R.M.; Eriyagama, N.B.; Gamage, T.M.; Sivarajasingham, S.
The advantages of the transverse, vertical and mean diameters for the measurement of skin reactions with M. leprae antigents were evaluated. iT was decided that the vertical and mean diameters offered no improvement over the transverse diameter and hence the use of the latter is recommended.

Studies on the possible toxicity of Artocarpus heterophyllus
(Sri Lanka Medical Association. Colombo, 1989) Fernando, M.R.; Thabrew, M.I.
Investigations with Artocarpus heterophyllus showed that the extracts of this lant excerted no adverse effects on liver function, heamatological parameters(haemoglobin concentration, red blood cell count, white blood cell count and packed cell volume) on the reproductive ability of experimental animals, and on the the histology of heart, lung, kidney, intestines and pancreas.

The incidence of iodine deficiency, hypo-and thyroidism in a sample of patients investigated at the Nuclear Medicine Unit, Peradeniya
(Sri Lanka Medical Association. Colombo, 1988) Herath, K.B.; Weerasekera, D.A.; Udugama, G.; Watawana, L.; Reginald, G.J.; Hemawardena, D.M.
Of 11,334 subjects inivestigated for thyroid disorder during a two year period 2.6perc. were euthyroid, 81.9perc. suffered from iodine deficiency, 9.0perc. were hypo thyroid and 6.4 perc. were hyper thyroid. Iodine deficiency was diagnosed in the age range 14-70 years, hyper thyroidism in the range 22-70 years and hypo- thyroidism in the entire range, infancy to 70 years. The female to male ratio was about 6:1 for iodine deficiency and about 3:1 hypo-and hyper thyroidism

    Observer variability in anthropometry
(Sri Lanka Medical Association. Colombo, 1988) Balasuriya, S.
Sixteen trained field workers, woking in eight teams, measured eight children to find the observer variability in the anthropometric measurements. All measurements were found to be subjected to a significant observer error, stature being the one with least error and skinfold thickness the one with the highest error. It is recommended that the latter measurement should not be used unless obsolutely indicated. The importance of recognising the high degree of observer error is discussed and certain precautions to reduce it are indicated.

    Anthropometric study of medical students
(Sri Lanka Medical Association. Colombo, 1988) Balasuriya, P.
Stature, sitting height, biacromial diameter, total arm length and foot length were measured in 133 mdical students. Analysis of data showed no ethnic differences in the mean values for measurements in males and females, in contrast to some past studies. Sex differences in the mean values were significant. Stature, sitting height, total arm length showed positive correlation with each pther in both sexes. While the correlation of biocromial diameter with other measurements was low in males, there was no correlation in females. The results indicate that a significant increase in stature since 1937 and 1948 has taken place due to a disproportionate increase in length of the lower limbs compared to the trunk. The upper limbs too appear to show an increase in length proportionate to stature. There is a significant increase in the transverse diameter of the upper end of the trunk. Certain segments of the body bear a constant relation ship to stature in both sexes.

Oral hypoglycaemic activity of the stem bark of Ficus benghalensis
(Sri Lanka Medical Association. Colombo, 1987) Fernado, M.R.
Investigation were carried out to determine whether the stem bark of ficus benghalensis possesses oral hypoglycaemic activity. The ability of aqueous extracts of this plant material to lower the fasting blood glucose level and improve glucose tolerance was investigated using sprague Dawley rats as the experimental model. The results indicate that the stem bark of Ficus benghalensis is capable of significantly lowering the fasting blood glucose level and markedly improving glucose tolerance in rats. The hypoglycaemic effects produced by a therapeutic dose

Evaluation of the galactagoguic activity of Asparagus falcatus
(Sri Lanka Medical Association. Colombo, 1987) Tennekoon, K.H.; Karunanayake, E.H.; Mahindaratna, M.P.D.
Aqueous, methanol, methylene and protein extracts of roots of Asparagus falcatus were administered orally to lactating sprague dawley rats for one week from the fifth day after the delivery. The weight gain of the litter was compared with control groups in order to evaluate the galactagoguic activity of the extracts. A significant increase in the percentage weight weght gain of the litter was not observed in the treatment groups following administration of any of these extracts. This is suggestive of an absence of galactagoguic activity in the extracts of A. falcatus investigated, at the doses administered.
